end of rev. III

An expression likely meaning to bring someone back against their will to a previous negative situation (CHD S, 361).
The meaning of arandaz, a hapax legomenon, is unclear. It is likely a Hittite ablative form (Friedrich J. – Kammenhuber A. 1975-1984a, 250; CLL, 25). Melchert H.C. 2024a, 25 suggests the meaning “insurgency, uprising”, though this depends on the somewhat uncertain suggestion of Hout Th.P.J. van den 1998c, 77 that these oracles relate to the murder of Piyaššili and Ḫaitili (see note to rev. III 5 and introduction).
On this meaning see Hout Th.P.J. van den 1998c, 222.
Hout Th.P.J. van den 1998c, 77 operates under the assumption that these oracles relate to the murder of Piyaššili and Ḫaitili. However, their names in the genitive might also be taken as a subjective genitive (Hoffner H.A. − Melchert H.C. 2024a, 332), understanding ešḫar (if the reconstruction is correct) as a noun denoting an action (killing). See also introduction.
The recording of this oracular inquiry is somewhat abridged, without the usual “let the first ḪURRI-bird be (un)favorable…” However, since the next inquiries do not attempt to ascertain any further event for which the god requires compensation, it is likely that the result of this inquiry was positive.
A rare Luwian word, attested only here (and rev. III 22) and in KUB 46.42, III 3, 4. See Melchert H.C. 2024a, 306. In KUB 46.42 the ablative form is qualified with the adjective dammelaza “fresh” as the source of items to be used in a ritual, based on which CHD S1, 64 tentatively suggests the translation “stock”. It is not clear whether such a meaning can make sense in the present text.
The exact meaning of this word is uncertain, but here likely refers to some kind of kinship group (CHD, S1, 93).
It is strange that only one set of exta results is requested, given that it seems the customary two observations are made. Since this is the end of the text and the oracular inquiry is concluded, perhaps we should understand that the following observations produce a favorable result, and that this is a shorthand for requesting the first exta to be favorable and the second to be unfavorable.
