Bird oracle fragment

introductio

Short description

Fragment with a bird oracle report from Šamuḫa/Kayalıpınar. Due to the poor state of preservation, very little of the text survives, and most of it is quite difficult to read. The content of obv. 6´-8´ clearly belongs to descriptions of bird flights, based on the standard formulary. The content of the previous lines obv. 1´-5´ cannot be determined, but it may be an oracle question/protasis.

Texts

Literature from the Konkordanz

  • E. Rieken, MDOG 146, 2014: 52

History of publication

Handcopy: E. Rieken (DAAM 1, Rieken E. 2019a).

Tablet characteristics

A fragment from the bottom section of a tablet, likely one-columned. Some text also survives on the lower edge, while the reverse side is lost. The preserved side includes an uninscribed paragraph spanning approximately four lines.

Palaeography and handwriting

NS (jh.), according to HPM Konkordanz, but a palaeographic analysis is difficult. Among the possible diagnostic signs is IK, which does not appear in a late form.

Linguistic characteristics

Note the omission of the verb ue-/uwa- in obv. 6´ (kolon 9).
