Oracles concerning the anger of the Zawalli- gods and other deities

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

The initial part of this texts contains oracles regarding the failure to bring out the Zawalli- gods and the offerings to be made in order to appease them, apparently after the inquirer had a vision of the god in a dream. Fragmentary references to the illness of the king suggest this was perhaps thought to have been caused by divine anger at this omission. The text then records oracles concerning offerings to be made to Pallanula, an invocation to the Sun-Goddess of Arinna, and a ritual of the Zawalli- gods. The final oracles ask whether Šarruma and the Storm-God of Nerik have looked favorably upon the king, and concern the cause of the Storm-God of Nerik’s anger at the queen.

Historical context

Zawalli- gods were thought by the Hittites to be the innate immortal divine spirit living in all people from birth, and which survived after the person’s death in the form of a statue housed in a temple. As shown by oracles such as those in this text, like any other god, offerings had to be made to Zawalli- gods, and neglect of their cultic needs could lead to their anger which would need to be assuaged. On Zawalli- gods, see Archi A. 1979b; Hout Th.P.J. van den 1998c, 81-84, Cognetti C. 2021a, 210-298. On oracles concerning Zawalli- gods, see Hout Th.P.J. van den 1998c, 136-157.
