Kurzbeschreibung |
The present oracles aim to determine whether the Storm-God of Šapinuwa is angry at the king, queen, and Kurunta, and to determine the cause of this anger. The first few oracles are dedicated to determining that the god is angry, whether he is angry with the royal couple or for some other reason, and to verifying the claim of the augur Kadu that the god is angry because of some kind of curse involving a fire in his temple. Other potential recipients and causes of the god’s anger are identified, including the chief of the guards and the destruction of ritual objects. On the reverse, the final oracles seem to ask whether the sacrilege and curse, which have presumably been confirmed to be related to the god’s wrath, are still present or not. It is confirmed by a bird oracle that this causes are no longer present.

Tablet characteristics |
The preserved text represents a fraction of the left-hand column of a large multi-column tablet. Not that some previous treatments regard KUB 22.9 as a join to the present text. This however cannot be the case, given the differences in ductus and palaeography in this smaller fragment, such as the fact its script is more slanted, and the different form of signs such as KIN.
Palaeography and handwriting |
The text is written is written in a late New-Hittite script (diagnostic signs: ID, ḪA, note also the very late form of KI in KBo 54.110, obv. 9′), though note the older form of GI.

Historical context |
Monte G.F. del – Tischler J. 1978a, 348 identify the king against whom the god’s anger is directed as Ḫattušili III. Other individuals featuring in this text are known from other oracular texts, including Kurunta (see Hout Th.P.J. van den 1995c, 82-96), and the augur Armaziti (mDGE6-LÚ), known from a wide range of texts in CTH 552, 569, 572, 577 and 579.
