Bird and KIN oracles concerning the building of a divine statue

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

The present text records a series of oracles concerning a statue of the Goddess of the Splendid Storm-God. The questions seem to relate to the potential results from building the statue of different materials, though the exact question is not clear, because of the frequent use of KI.MIN to repeat part of the question lost in a break before the start of the preserved text.

Historical context

The building of divine statues was clearly importance to the Hittites (see in general Collins B.J. 2005b), and had to be done in a specific manner and with specific materials to best please the god. Hence, we have some other oracles concerning the building of divine statues (see Christiansen B. 2025, JCS 77).

The bird omens in this text are interpreted by one AMAR.MUŠEN, who also appears in HFAC 76. See Hout Th.P.J. van den 1995c, 204-206.
